Many of us believe that eating too much sugar will cause diabetes. But, is it really true? Can you get diabetes from eating too much sugar?
Here’s the Fact!
Eating sugar does not cause diabetes. However, there is a way sugar consumption can influence the chance of developing diabetes. If you consume too much sugar, it will increase your calorie intake and this may lead to weight gain. And, being overweight increases your risk of getting diabetes by almost 10 times!
Now, the question is - how much sugar is too much! According to the American Heart Association, the daily intake of sugar must not exceed 36 grams (about 9 teaspoons) for men and 25 grams (about 6 teaspoons) for women. While measuring your daily intake, count on the sugar content present in the processed food too. For example, if you have consumed a tablespoon of tomato ketchup (which contains 1 teaspoon of sugar), mind your sugar-intake range accordingly, for the rest of the day.
It is important to note that the consumption of ready to eat items and other fatty foods will also cause similar weight gain, thus elevating your risk of diabetes. Hence, instead of cutting down only on sugar, it is worthwhile to restrict both sugar and fat in your diet.
Follow an active lifestyle by incorporating at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Avoid processed foods and opt for a healthier fiber-rich diet so to stay healthy inside-out!
