Question : My wife is a healthy 73 y.o.f. Periodically she experiences an episode of nausea. There is no accompanying vomiting, diherra, or stomach pain. These episodes usually last for a day or so, and are not debilitating. She takes medication for her thyroid, hypertension meds, and Crestor. In April 2017 she had a prolapsed bladder repaired, and her uterus removed, due to 2 unsuccessful DNC procedures. Post surgical pathological examination reveled a small amount of cancer, which was rated as Stage 1A. A followup exam with an OB/GYN physician that specializes in gynecological oncology recommended that her ovaries be removed for prophylactic reasons, which was done in August 2017.
Her family practice physician has suggested an ultrasound, and the Gastroenterologist that performs our routine colonoscopy exams recommended an endoscopy. We visited this physician in March, and he scheduled the procedure for XXXXXXX
Do you have any idea as to what may be causing these episodes to occur? Is it possible that this condition could be the result of lingering effects from her surgeries?
Thank you.

There seems to be no specific event that causes the nausea. She doesn’t take any medication for it, as the episode passes in a day or so, and is not dibilitating. The surgeon prescribed no anti- cancer medication following the surgeries. She doesn’t have any heartburn, gas, or bloating. No related dizziness or vertigo. The episode seems to occur after eating, but we have not be able to identify a specific food.

Hello again and thanks for follow up,
Time of start of nausea after having food is very important,
As her nausea is related to food intake;can very likely be due to gastritis or ulcers in stomach. Its not necessary that all symptoms like pain heartburn etc are always there in a patient of gastritis.
Better idea would be to go for an endoscopy to look for ulcers or gastritis.
Lastly sir i don't think that her previous surgeries etc are responsible for nausea. If endoscopy is normal then the patient have to be taken as a organic patient(symptoms present without a identified cause) and treatment for nausea would be given to her on as and when required basic.
Lastly any history of headache, vertigo tinnitus ,dizziness or family history of migraine. Its not necessary that pain is always there;Acephalgic variant of migraine is also seen in some patients.
Hope it helped.
Follow ups are welcome.
Thanks

Do you think that OTC anti acid tablets would be of help in easing the symptoms until they pass?

Detailed Answer:
Yes they could be very helpful for controlling symptoms.
Infact as of now the only way out is to use medications and to see how patient responds to it.
Can give her Zofran 4mg sos for nausea. Its a safe medication and can be used. However if enoscopyturns out to be normal then she could be treated on guidelines of Acephalgic migraine(and see how she responds to it).
Hope i was helpful.
Feel free to follow up.
Warm regards!
