Question : Hello
I've had problems with my stomach and been writing here before. I've also visited my own doctor and received the laboratory tests online now and need some help until I can call my own doctor.
I've had a messed up stomach with diarrhea, mucous and general bad cramps and a feeling of not being done at the toilet. I had blood-work done and a stool sample tested and the following results here:
In my stool they found this positive: E. coli: eae A virulensgen (EPEC or A/EEC)
It's lasted longer than a month now.
My blood work showed:
Gluten - 0.10 (normal)
Immunglobulin - 57.2 (normal)
What should I do now and is it normal that an e-coli infection can last for months and not go away???

Brief Answer:
Tetracycline won't help. Ecoli is a gram-negative bacterium.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
E.coli is a gram-negative bacteria and could be easily eradicated by a course of antibiotic.
As you are a chronic case, a 10 days treatment with Cefixime 200mg combined with Ofloxacin 200mg taken twice daily would eradicate the bacterium. These are prescription based medications.
After 10 days of therapy get a stool test repeat to see if bacteria is eradicated or not.
As per your query without proper antibiotic therapy, it won't go away.
Hope I was helpful. Follow-ups are welcome.
Regards

Thanks for the answer Dr.
I've called my own doctor but he said it's not something that they do anything about normally. But now I've had diarrhea and pain for at least 1-2 months and perhaps even since the infection back in February.
He referred me further to the gastro part of the hospital but I have no idea what they'll do or how long I have to wait for that. Is there something I can do from home that will aid me overcoming this or something I should do with the healthcare to get things started? I have also read that often antibiotics don't help on strains of pathogenic e-coli?
Should I avoid certain foods or is there something I should eat to feel better?
Will tetracycline make my situation worse since it's potentially killing of other bacteria in my gut and leaving more space for the bad bacteria or is it insignificant?

Hi,
E.coli pathogenic strain can be very well treated with antibiotics..
Unless treated with proper antibiotics things would be recurrent. 2)Your stool form is suggestive of lack of fiber in the stool.
Take Ispaghula husk 30 grams a day to improve fiber intake.gastroenteritis causes inflammation in intestines, therefore, every moment of intestine would cause pain or spasm. As intestines are inflamed a large amount of mucus would be secreted along with improper water absorption causing stools to be watery.
Some prescription based medications for him- Cefiximine 200mg twice daily Metronidazole 400mg thrice daily(would cover bacteria and protozoans also). Keep a watch on blood pressure and pulse. If the pulse is more then 110/minute or Upper blood pressure is less then 100mm of hg shift to the nearest emergency room.
Try small amounts of foods, such as soup, rice, pasta, and bread. Use special rehydration drinks made from sachets electoral solution to maintain depleted electrolyte levels in serum.
General precaution, Increase lukewarm water intake - Try to eat lot of vegetables, take a lot of Yogurt along with food.
Regards
