Brief Answer:
antibiotics would be needed for strep throat

Detailed Answer:
HI,

Sore throat can be due to viral or bacterial infection (strep throat) with viral infection being a lot more common.

Both can cause pain in the throat and fever but viral sore throat tends to last 3 to 4 days mostly whereas bacterial tends to cause prolonged symptoms.
The fever in bacterial infection (strep) also tends to be more severe.

If you do have strep throat, then a course of antibiotics is needed. Antibiotics would be needed to treat the bacterial infection.

Viral infection would be treated with pain killers if needed (eg ibuprofen, naproxen), topical meds such as chloroseptic or covonia throat spray or diflam or dispirin, using cool liquids.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
