I have a question about the Covid vaccination. My mother plans to get it tomorrow but she doesn't feel completely comfortable...even though her doctor is encouraging her to get it. She is 76 and active. 5 years ago she had a moderate stroke from which she fully recovered. During that time they incidentally found a 3 mm aneurysm that they basically said needed NO follow up because "it had a very low chance of rupture and at her age they probably wouldn't fix it". She remains on Plavix and Aspirin. She regularly sees her general practitioner but really has had no follow up on these issues in several years because she has had no further problems. She knows she risks bad results if she gets the virus but the shot is scarey too. Do you know of any reason, in regard to the stroke or aneurysm, that would make you wary of recommending the vaccine for her. If she were your pateient would you encourage her to get it?
The vaccine is safe for the stroke survivors too.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to the "Ask a Doctor" service.
I have read your query.
The COVID-19 vaccine is tested to be safe following strict rules, and there is no evidence so far that it may do any harm in stroke patients.
The aneurysm is very small and shouldn't cause any problems also during vaccination.
Your mother belongs to group 3 regarding her age when it comes to the priority vaccination guidelines,
and group 6 when it comes to stroke survivors.
So, there are two strong reasons for your mother to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
