Question : Good morning. My best friend has told me that there is a procedure that "inverts" the stomach. The hiatal and the pyloric valves are transposed to enable acids to go down instead of up. Is there really such a procedure???

Brief Answer:

There is no such procedure most likely she was talking about fundoplication. Stomach is not inverted in any of the surgeries.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Most likely you are talking about surgery called Nissen fundoplication.

This surgery involves tightening the opening in your diaphragm with stitches to keep your stomach from bulging upward through the opening in the muscle wall.

However a new surgery named The transoral incisionless fundoplication has evolved these days and is a minimally invasive surgery.

However from years Nissen fundoplication is surgery of choice in patients over 50 years of age.

However, surgery is always last-resort treatment and should be done only when all medical alternatives are not effective.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
