Question : 49-year-old male has not eaten since last night but feels like that meal is stuck in his stomach. Had several bouts of diarrhea in the night and vomited a small amount twice today. What he threw up was completely undigested. He feels like he has a belly full of food. Other complaint is acidic burps. He feels like vomiting his stomach contents would be a great relief but has not been able to make himself throw up. What do you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis most likely.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The symptoms you are describing are mostly suggestive of Bacterial gastroenteritis (commonly called food poisoning), which is the bacterial infection of the intestine.

Stool analysis and culture are required to confirm the diagnosis. Management is with antibiotics (usually a combination of Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole) for which you will need a prescription. So please be advised to follow up with the urgent care.

Meanwhile, drink plenty of water and electrolyte containing drinks like Gatorade. Follow soft diet. BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) diet will be easier on your tummy.
As of now take these over the counter medications;
Along with it take Fybrogel husk,It will increase the bulk of your stools.
Tab imodium 4mg stat folowed by 2 mg twice daily can be added to control frequency of motions
Eat light and easily digestible food.
Drink plenty of water and ORS electrolytes to maintain rehydration.
You can also take zofran 4mg sos for vomiting.
I would suggest you to go for few tests
Ultra sound abdomen
Stool test under microscope
Complete blood count
Total and differential leucocyte count.

Hope this answers your query. Please let me know if you need further clarification
Regards
