Question : I have vertigo in only my left stide. It only effects me when I rise up or lower the left side of my head to recline. It occurred after I stuck a tip deep into that ear to find what was causing an itching sensation. That was six months ago and I still experience dizziness upon recline or rising up from my left side. I also have tinnitus on the left side of my ear but no hearing loss.

Brief Answer:
A healthy lifestyle and specific treatment would help.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

* Your problem had started from the probable injury to ear drum... while a tip was inserted deep in ear to help itching.(which can be due to wax, simple dryness of ear or allergy)

The mild injury to ear drum seems to have caused infection in internal ear... thereby affecting sensory hairy cells in cochlear apparatus (that has role in maintaining balance).. to cause vertigo and tinnitus. It was only 6 months back... so earliest treatment of the infection after confirmation by detailed ear examination, needful investigations, would help to stop the problem.

- Age is another factor causing the problem.
- Long running diabetes needs to be controlled within normal limits and adjuvant therapy (vitamin B12) would reduce the severity of symptoms.
- Any medications like aspirin / certain antibiotics Ibuprofen or diuretics are ototoxic... they can lead to the problem.. which would resolve after stopping the drugs (with advise of treating doctor)
- Exposure to loud sounds needs to be avoided or lessened by using ear plugs.
- Healthy lifestyle (without smoking, alcohol) / Tinnitus retraining therapy under expert guidance would ease the problem.
In this context consultation of ENT would be advised for expert care and drug for controlling vertigo.

I hope that answers your query. Any follow up query is welcome.

Thanks.
