Question : hello. I had a gallbladder laparoscopic surgery five days ago on 4/6/2018 after getting a severe painful attack. surgery was success and was discharged next day morning with an antibiotic (Cipro) and painkiller (oxycodone). since I got home while the pain from surgery gets better everyday, I am also eating and seems fine, I have had a small fever. it reaches 100.4 by end of day not much higher (taken by rectal) I thought it would go away after 1-2 days but now on fifth day I am starting to panic, is this a bad sign of something? I don't feel any infection symptoms like cough or anything. is it possible the body to have raised temperature just due to surgery for a while? I have an appointment with my doctor in 3 days but I am not sure if I should keep waiting or not. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Fever is the body's way to tell that there is something wrong, especially if the temperature is more then 100 degree F.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Fever is one of the earliest signs used by our body to indicate that there is something wrong with the body. Increase in temperature is a natural way by which the body tries to coagulate protein (bacterial capsule is made of protein). In layman's language, by increasing temperature body tries to kill bacteria.
In fact fever more then 100 degree F should never be neglected. At least a complete blood count and total and differential leucocyte counts should be done on you to see any infection.

An ultrasound repeat should also be done.

Many times bacteria are resistant to antibiotics so a broad spectrum antibiotic like Cefixime should be given instead of Ciplox.

I would not suggest you to wait for 3 days. Visit nearest Emergency room and get blood tests done.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.
