Brief Answer:
Most common sign of portal hypertension.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for query,
Caput medusae is one of the cardinal features of portal hypertension. The appearance is due to cutanous collateral formation between distended paraumbilical veins that radiate from the umbilicus across the abdomen to join systemic veins which takes impure blood to heart. This is one of the characterstic signs of portal hypertension.Basically its a collateral blood supply formed due to increased pressure in portal vein. Its a adaptation done by body. Its a sign not a disease in itself.
