Question : I've been experiencing sudden fatigue crashes after a bowel movement, and am also suffering from groin pain and arthritis. Hip replacement is being considered; Dr. Gainor said better now than later. I'm almost 76 and my Sansum's Clinic internist has been prescribing a minimum dosage Levothyrotxine since I went through a difficult menopause at age 51 and had incapacitating headaches. All seemed well except I had a bicycle accident with a knee injury that led to extreme pain and never really cleared up. I wear knee supports daily. My internist had blood tests taken and said I was hypothyroid. He was going to prescribe a higher dosage of my drug until he asked if I took my medication with my supplments; none of which contained calcium. He decided I should take my thyroid medication an hour before the supplements and eating breakfast. I drank an ice cold smoothie and started shaking, plus experienced sudden exhaustion about 2 weeks ago. I went to Urgent Care and they said I was fine. Today was the final straw. After about 11 hours of sleep (having taken my thyroid medication at 3 a.m. to make sure it wouldn't interact with my supplments), I had a half a cup of coffee with milk and essentially never woke up. I couldn't do my hip/groin exercises, but I did feel better after one of my international students visited me and I managed to get out and walk a few blocks. I'm the author of NEVER MARRY IN MOROCCO and a few other literary attempts. I have started doing stand up semi-professionally and am scheduled to be on stage on Thursday. I am known for my sense of humor, but it ran out today for the most part. I plan to call my internist and ask to have another TSH blood test done although he wanted me to wait 2 months and it hasn't been a full 2 months. I feel like this is putting me through more than a woman of my age can take.
Brief Answer:
Get TSH tested now.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns,
As per your query answers are-
The advice given by your internist was very good. Time of taking levothyroxine is very important. Its a highly plasma bound drug and should be taken with just a sip of water. Nothing should be taken for 60 minutes before and 90 minutes after taking this medication. Even few sips of water can hamper the results of this drug. However now you can go for the test again. 1 month is more then enough.
It usually take 4 weeks before patient starts responding to it.
Hope i was helpful. Feel free to follow up dear.
