Could Irregular Periods Be A Sign Of Menopause?

I am 44 years old and missed my period. I have never missed a period before except when I was pregnant. In the last year I have been experiencing more irregular periods. Some cycles were 16 days others were 23 to 28 days. I do not feel pregnant, no breast tenerness, nausea or do I feel different. I do not feel like I am going to start my period either, no bloating or cramps. Could this be the start of menopause and are these nornal symptoms? Also, I am 5 days late and have not taken a pregnancy test.
