Could The Pain In The Left Leg Be Due To Bruised Sciatica Nerve?

My friend had an abscess on his spine about L4-L5 which required emergency surgery because of the pain. His left leg is numb and he cannot move it or support his weight on it. Could this be a bruised sciatic nerve? If so, how long might it take to return to normal?
