Does Influenza Cause Blood Thinning In Children?

I have a friend here at work who wants to know if influenza in children (under 5years) can cause blood thinning. Her child has developed a rash and then bruising in the area of the rash. Drs at one hospital were concerned about her clotting times and yet at another hospital--a chidlrens emerg they were less concerned..telling her to have her child s blood work repeated in a few weeks. I am a non pracitcing RPN and am not familiar with blood thinning occuring with or shortly after having the flu

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I am in agreement with you. Infection with influenza virus can cause fever, cough, runny nose, ear infection, pneumonia, and muscle aches and pains. However, influenza does not cause bruising nor prolonged clotting times. Has the bruising spread? Is there more evidence of bleeding- from gums, blood in vomit, urine, stool, coughing up blood? Do her cuts take a long time to stop bleeding? Remember if a child less than nine yrs. old is getting the flu vaccine for the first time then she needs two flu vaccines during that flu season.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
