How To Treat A Large Blood Blister At The End Of The Toe Nail?

My husband banged his 2nd toe pretty bad while running after the dog barefooted. He has a large blood blister at te base of the nail and its purle on the top toward his foot but not on the bottom. He also has red splotches up his leg. Should he go to the doctor?
