Is It Possible For The Benign Tumor To Become Cancerous?

Hi, I have a very heavy bleeding since may last year. I ignore it as thought it's normal but longer and longer it bothers me. then I went to ob/gyn, doctor did pap smear, byopsy and ultrasound. the result was I have tumor (benign). And doctor suggest to have hysterectomy. My question is it's dangerous and if not treatment is it possible become cancer?
