Is There A Safer Alternative To Microgynon?

I have been on microgynon for about four years because of painful and heavy periods, but over the last two years I have noticed female pattern balding which is accelerating at quite an alarming rate. The doctor says that his nothing to do with microgynon but I think it does and I would like to switch pills. The question is to what pill and what will be the side effects of switching? I am 39, not sure of weight but I am quite slim, no medical problems. The female members of my family did not start to lose hair until late '50s.
