What Can Help Subside Pain Caused By Chronic Sciatica?
My doctor says I have chronic sciatica, the pain I have is so intense sometimes I cannot even stand up. I am a nurse and I cannot be on pain medication (also my family has addictive tendencies). I have tried stretching, exercise and yoga but nothing is helping. I do not know what else to do. The pain is coming to the point of being debilitating.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
HI, The sciatic pain can be treated by taking rest for 2 weeks, along with Nonsteroidalantiinflammatory drugs & vitamin B12 injections to manage the stressful sciatic nerve. The exercises/ physical therapy should be started after the pain is reduced. Use of steroids do help in few cases. The last resort is operative management to relieve compression on nerve at lower spinal level. Thanks.
