What Causes A Late Period With Red Mucusy Menstrual Flow?

I am a 36 year old female who is usually on a 28 day cycle with a 4 day bleeding timeframe on periods. This month I was 2 days late and when I finally got my period, I had brick red mucusy blood lasting for about 12 hours and then nothing. Is this normal?
