What Causes An Intense Itch On The Clitoris?

I am 63 years old. I have an intense itch on the clitoris, but more worringly I feel like something is biting me. I have not been near a man for 15 years so can not have a sexual transmitted disease. My doctor seems to think this is hormonal, but I am not so sure.
