What Causes An Irregular Mentstrual Cycle?

I have an irregular mentstrual cycle and I am clotting really bad. Once I went for 8 days then it would stop for about 2 days and I would bleed again, stop another couple of days and then brown spotting. Also, I went 1 year without haveing a menstrual cycle. What could be the problem?
