What Causes Bleeding In Nipples?

I had bleeding from my left nipple that continued for an hour. I am not pregnant or breastfeeding and am 28 years old. My doctor set me up for a mammogram and utltrasound. What are they looking for and what could be some possible reasons for the bleeding.
