What Causes Breathing Difficulty And Excessive Salivation?

My son is 24 and has been having trouble breathing, very high sputum production for 8 months consistently. He has been on prednisone 3 times in the last 8 months, taking Advair and Zyrtec consistently for the last 6 months. He has needed to do 4-5 breathing treatments with a nebulizer machine for the past 6 weeks. He has Eosinophils that are over double the upper limits of normal but a normal IgE. Could this be something more serious than an asthma exacerbation?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

IgE test indicates presence of an allergy. The immunoglobulins suggest absence of bacterial viral infection. So don't worry. Your son has asthmatic symptoms caused by allergy which can be controlled by detection, avoidance, and desensitization of allergens.

So, I feel instead of controlling the symptoms by steroids and nebulization, he should be subjected to allergy detection test to recognize things he is allergic to. This needs to be followed by self-help by avoiding the allergens and desensitization treatment advised by expert.

Respiratory exercises (pranayama) and healthy permissible (excluding food allergens) diet would raise the resistance and offer health.

Preventive medicines for avoiding symptoms and active treatment during exacerbation would offer him normal life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
