What Causes Brown Discharge But No Bleeding Like Periods?

Hi for the last couple of time is am supposed to have a period, its just been brown mucus (very little), could i be pregnant? i took a test a few weeks ago but it came back negative but i would not call it a period which i am having for the last couple of times.
