What Causes Brown Discharge?

I just started taking lutera birth control and I am down to the pills at the end of the month. I had a period last 2 and a half weeks and now I am spotting brown discharge. My discharge also tastes like chemical. Much like hand sanitizer. I need help. Is this normal!?
