What Causes Bruise And Spots In Shin Area?

My husband was hit in the shin area by a softball a week ago. There was an immediate bruise but it went away almost as quickly. We iced it that night and the bruising came back. It is now a week later and the bruising has spread, including some spots on the foot where it looks like the blood has pooled. Today he informed me that it hurts again and there is a nice sized lump at the impact spot. There is still plenty of bruising. Is there anything to worry about or should we just wait and see what happens?
