What Causes Delayed Periods?

on 23rd july 2011 i was on my last periods. it is now 27th august 2011 and i have not yet come on my periods. i am also fasting as i am muslim. i have done a pregnancy test today (27/08/11, clear blue digital) and it came up as not pregnant, is this correct? did i do the test at the correct time?
