What Causes Heavy Periods?

I took a minigynon tablet two days ago and suddenly became heavier than usual, so I aborted taking the pill. I am now 3 days into my period, and instead of getting lighter and ending (like it usually does), my flow is still VERY heavy :( Is this a reaction to the pill?
