What Causes Missed Periods After Taking Birth Control Pills?

Hi, I was not so great with taking my birth control last month. I had to take two a day a few times and missed two in a row but I followed the instructions to keep taking the pills normal. I either did not have sex and I m quite certain the few times I did, we used protection. Is it normal that I missed my period?
