What Causes Pain While Removing Tampon?

I'm 43 years old, have been using tamponds since I started my period. During my last period, when I would remove my tampond it hurt so bad I didn't think I was going to be able to get it out. I have the same partner for over a year and havent had intercourse in the last 4 months. Any Ideas what I could be?
