What Causes Pain While Wearing And Removing Tampon?

I'm 19 years old and when i wear a tampon i get sharp, shooting pains and when taking them out it brings tears to my eyes. Yes i have had sex and I'm sexually active but i use protection. I'm not on birth control and I've worn tampons since i was a teenager.
