What Causes Severe Bleeding After IUD Removal?

I had an IUD removed 10 days ago, my vaginal bleeding has increased steadily for the last 10 days and now am bleeding pretty heavily (heavier than I ever have). I am having to change my tampon every half hour and am passing very large blood clots. (for three days now). I do have sharp cramps right below my belly button right before I pass one of the clots. Is this normal after IUD removal. My platelets are low at 84000. Should I seek medical attention or can I wait? I am 38, 165 lbs and 5'4.
