What Causes Skin Welts?

I have 2 or 3 large welt like (I thought they were pimples) but they did not come to a head on both sides of my back right under bra line. They are really annoying. I am 45 years old and just started taking birth control pills again. I weight about 165 and am 5'4". They are very painful but just came out of nowhere.
