What Causes Spotting And Brown Bleeding While On Depo Provera?

Ive been on Depo provera for like 4 years now. and maybe 2 times a year i get spotting, normal blood, and brown blood (the brown kinda of smells funky sometimes). i was told you shouldnt have a period after being on that long? but i do masturbate often. Answers please?
