What Causes Throbbing, Sharp Pain On Hand Between Base, Center Of Palm?

All of a sudden my left hand between the base and center of my palm started hurting with throbbing, sharp pain. The vein looked like it was becoming enlarged. After 30 minutes the pain went away but I can see that the vein still looks bigger. What could have caused this?
