What Causes Vaginal Pain During An Intercourse?

i am a newly marriage girl . i am 28 year, 1m and 60 cm height..
during intercourse, i feel pain because the vaginal tube is narrow.
when asked a doctor, she told me that my hymen is thick and of rubber type which is not easily broken by intercourse. she told me that i need to make a surgery to open the hymen.
is it safe surgery?..did i will feel pain during surgery?.how long does it last?..does the doctor will open in the wall of the vaginal tube to reach the hymen in order to remove it..??
