What Could Be The Reddish Itchy Patches On My Body?

I have reddish, circular, patches that started on my inner thighs years ago, but have now spread to my stomach and upper arms. They are not painful or itchy, and they are raised sometimes, but mostly they only appear to be raised (you can see them, but if you rub you finger over them you won't feel anything). Sometimes they may get lighter and almost disappear (not all of them, just different ones at random times) as if they have gone away. However, they rarely ever go away for good. They usually start as small circles, and over time the circle gets bigger. As a circle gets bigger, it is sometimes more oval shaped. This may be a crazy analogy, but I was once a K5 teacher and when they hold hands to make a circle, they are joined together, but not in a very good circle.

In the beginning I went to a dermatologist and was given a couple of different creams, tested for sugar, and told that he didn't know what it was. As I said, they are not painful or itchy; just ugly and they spread. One other note...Apparently they are not contagious because neither of my children nor my husband have them.

Thanks! :)
