What Is The Cause Of Having Extremely Dry Skin Since Childhood?

My skin has been extremely dry since I was a child. My hands, even as a teen, look like old lady's hands. I am now nearly 60 and after having gone to doctors all my life and having been told I have "dry skin," I am curious to know if there is a medical condition that may have caused this. My father was a heavy smoker, and I was wondering if that might have made my skin so bad.
