What Is The Treatment For Sore And Painful Nipples?

I am a 42 year old woman...not pregnet...not breastfeeding...never been on birth control...my nipples are sore and sometimes painful even when I am not on my period...supper sensitive and white nipples...I am sure it could be something to do with hormones...just wondering what could be the cause? thank you
