Aloha, Dr. Sree Bhusham, I Am A 67 Healthy (almost)

Aloha, Dr. Sree Bhusham,

I am a 67 healthy (almost) relocated from NJ, practicing Speech and Language Pathologist now living in Maui, Hawaii.

This is my story. My Stone history began 17 years ago. I had my fist episode when I was 50. I did not know what it was. Rushed to the hospital and pass it (them). My next when I was about 55. I knew what it was, got the hospital, passed it and then did the bath pounding. My biggest one was a golf ball size stone. I was unwell for several days and then in very bad pain almost 3 years ago. Pain was unbearable, I could not breath. Was at ER. Dr. came in about 9:30 PM and because I was on aspirin regime a stent was put it the next morning. Surgery a week later thru my back. The about a week later, another procedure to remove the rest of the stones. Terrible stents (I am a woman). Removed a week later.

Moved to Maui in July 2014. Found a wonderful PA, Shannon Ray, in Makawao. I told her there was an odor to my urine. It turned our there was blood. I was assigned to Oahu in December for 6 weeks and I was able to see a urologist (my first not so very nice man) and I was able to have a procedure to remove many, many stones and stents put in at Queens Hospital. This doctor had strong negative opinions about the state of medicine and I did not want to return to Oahu. I returned to Maui to my husband and was able to find a wonderfully kind urologist to remove the stents as I was still on antibiotics and could finally walk and sit without pain. He agree to be my treating urologist. Yaay! I did an MRT and he is monitoring me. I drink about a gallon of water every day. No blood was found in my last urine sample with my PA about three weeks ago.

Now here is the catch. SInce before we left in May 2014 I have had a pain under my right arm. I was checked by my dermatologist, primary care and gynecologist in NJ before we move on July 1 2014. It was not a bad pain, not shingles and the dermatologist thought a minor neurolgical dermatitis.

By November the pain had become a dragon spitting needles under my arm. I was working for any agency thru December on Oahu and carried a frozen water bottle under my right arm. That is when I did the kidney stone removal.

I was able to get an appointment with a wonderful neurologist Dr. Cora Tasaki in Makawao, Maui in February. Things move on island time here. We began we Gabapentin, then moved to Lyrica also using a Lydocaine patch and Alleve. I gained 13 pounds in 4 months with no pain loss on maximum doses.

I am now on Topiramate and moved fromWellbutrin to Duloxetine. I have lost the weight. Have some relief. The dragon under my arm is now an axe chopped in and left it. Pain runs from a 5-9. The heat here also has an effect on the pain. I have had three MRIs One for my kidney, one full body and one for my brain. I have also had a thyroid ultra sound as there is a little dot, that has been there for some time.

As I said, I am a speech/ language pathologist and have 40 years of expertise in my field. Could there possibly be a relationship between the pain under my arm and my kidneys? At this point I am hoping for a yes. I am so grateful for 21st Century technology. This is my FIRST time using a medical site.

Mahalo nui loa. I am in your debt and look forward to hearing from you
