Are Lupron Injections Advisable For A Child?

My 8 year old granddaughter seems to be developing prematurely. She has developed breast, body odor, pubic hair, under arm hair and grown 6 inches in the past year. Her endocrinologist wants to put her on Lupron injections. Is this safe and are there long lasting side effects from this drug?
