Are Antibiotics, Effective For Viral Throat Infections?

I have a throat infection which I believe is "viral" and not bactirial. It has now moved to my ears and caused my balance to be thrown off. I am now on my second batch of antibiotics and wonder if I am doing the right thing taking antibiotics to treat this.
