Are Dark Spots On Penis Normal?

hi,i have some dark brown spots on the head of my penis,i was told by my doctor that they are skin pigment change,they are not raised or ever get sore,and when i get an erection they fade a bit,can you tell me if this is common,i am 49 years old and white.
