Can Erythromycin Topical Gel Be Used On Infected Toenail?

I had my big toenail on my left foot removed. It became severely infected and I was diagnosed with Cellulitis. I have to wait to see the foot doctor. I`ve been to the ER several times and they won`t do anything for me as I am between PCP`s at the moment. A friend gave me some Erythromycin topical gel to try. Is this a good idea?
