Can Lithium Be Taken If Suffering From Spongy Kidney?

I have been diagnosed with a minor case of sponge kidney that showed up on kub films during an ivp for a kidney stone. I am bipolar and my psychiatrist wants to administer lithium. I made an appointment with my urologist to see for sure but generally can I take this medicine with my sponge kidney?
