Can Milk Of Magnesia Be Taken For Severe Constipation?

Hello Doctor, I am suffering with terrible constipation and was in the ER this past weekend. I have been taking milk of magnesia and I am wondering if I can take it and then eat dinner? I haven't eaten a lot today and am just getting my appetite back
