Can A Leg Fracture Lead To Death?

i have a friend that fell and broke his leg and his knee about a week ago last night he had flu like sytoms and this morning woke up and asked to have 911 called he died on the way to the hospital this morning my question is could the break have something to do with his death he was only 26 years old i just want to make sure that his family has all info to find out why he died this morning
