Can a urinary tract infection cause toxic megacolon with sepsis? But the urinary tract is not part of the digestive tract. A 102 year-old female was physically weak, had difficulty walking and a history of falling. She was taken to a hospital where her white cell count was 28,300 indicating an infection. she was diagnosed with a UTI & given CIPRO. After 5 days released to a nursing home for physical therapy. Her condition got worse, she presented confusion, abdominal pain, belly distension, nausea & frequent vomiting. When she vomited blood (coffee ground color) she was rushed to another ER and died next day - the death certificate read TOXIC MEGA-COLON with SEPSIS. Am I missing something! Can a urinary tract infection cause toxicmegacolon, they are separate systems!
