Can Birth Control Make Period Shorter?

I just looked at my pad just in case my period was coming..but all I saw was very light apotty red, I did take a shot for birth control and my doctor did say my period will get shorter and lighter but what I saw did not seem to match exactly what he said and my period is about 2 weeks late.
