Can Birth Control Pills Affect Menstruation?

I recently started birth control for the first time. I took the first week of pills. I had sex at the beginning of the week but haven't taken any pills in about four days. I started to bleed and have cramping last night and it's continuing into today. Is this my period starting early or something else?
